Why start with values

Starting with values has helped me, couples, and countless organizations I've worked with. Folks usually try to find help when they're in crisis, but whenever we've skipped this foundational work, it's shown up later as expensive rework.

Below is a list of possible core values organized by domain to help you narrow down the highest values for yourself and your organization.

Mission vs. Vision

Vision — a company's long-term goals. Vision statements are broad and don't change. "We envision a world where every child is met with dignity and every organization operates from its core."

Mission — the current purpose and method for contributing to the vision. It includes what the organization does, who it serves, and how it makes contact with the world.

If you think there's overlap, you're right. It's okay — you don't have to do it perfectly. Do your best.

Do The Values (Culture)

If your five values are Integrity · Respect · Innovation · Collaboration · Excellence — but you don't have a culture to implement them — they're not that meaningful. A list on a wall is not a value; a value is what people actually do when there's a trade-off. Culture is the set of daily practices, hiring choices, feedback norms, and consequences that turn declared values into lived ones. Without that architecture, values are decoration.

The work is not to pick the right five words. It's to build the surrounding practice — how disagreements are resolved, who gets promoted, what gets rewarded, what gets ignored, what leaders do when no one is watching — such that the words become predictions of behaviour rather than aspirations.
